“Self -awareness is a key to self-mastery — Gretchen Rubin”

As a continuation of the #seewithin series, I wanted to write about how self-awareness can shape your thinking. The inspiration for this write-up came up when I was trying to answer a question online — I answered it incorrectly. I asked myself why did I answer is incorrect, the reason being I didn’t understand the question. When applied to oneself, if you don’t understand yourself how will you learn to grow.

Growth is the only evidence of life — Cardinal Newman

As I take steps to explore the subject more, I tend to see how necessary and important it is self-awareness for me and everyone. One of the most interesting things I came across is “ The Johari Window” shown below:

Some of the ways how self-awareness can help you:

You can become a better communicator: By understanding your emotions, you can communicate with others your thoughts.

Better Decision making: As you become more aware of yourself, you would know your strengths and weaknesses.

Open to receiving feedback: Once you are self- aware, you will be more open to receive feedback and learn to see what areas you can develop or what areas you are good at.

More aware in making decisions: Knowing what you want is most important and what you don’t and being responsible for your own choices can lead to a fulfilled life.

How can you try be more self- aware?

Journal your thoughts every day, revisit them once in a while. Try to look at your thoughts from another person’s perspective. This is where you reflect on your thoughts and behavior. You learn more about you than the day before.

→ Be open to asking feedback from near and dear ones: When you receive feedback from your dear ones, you know its constructive criticism and you can work towards improving those aspects

Meditate: When you let those thoughts flow freely — you will be at peace. And this doesn’t have to happen right away just like how it happened with me.

The man who moves a mountain begins carrying away small stones — Confucius

You can try doing it in the form of small exercises everyday and as time progresses you would be seeing the results yourself.

Self -awareness gives you the capacity to learn from your mistakes as well as your successes — Lawrence Bossidy
